Social Systems
Our beautiful Florence is intellegently based on a social class system, when merchants become wealthier they are allowed to promote themselves into a higher social class and recieve a higher status in the society. The merchants in Florence are called popolo grasso, or in english, the fat people. They group themsleves into guilds, which stand for the wool manufacturers and wool finishers, silk merchants, and bankers. Workers and shop people, on the other hand, are called popolo minuto, or the little people. Most workers are peasants who move to our fine city for work, they cannot join a guild but after some time will be able to promote into one.
